As we move into 2023, interior design is set to be bolder and more creative than ever before. In this post, we at Royal LePage Connect Realty, have compiled the top five interior design trends for this year, which include 70's-inspired design, cozy-living, sustainable design, more-is-more pattern mixing, and the use of indestructible materials and fabrics.

If a colour could set the theme for a year’s worth of trends, then Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2023 is that. The selected hue, called Viva Magenta, is every bit as bold and energized as its name suggests, with Pantone’s official release calling the shade “powerful” and “empowering”.

Viva Magenta is described as “a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.”

And it’s on this note of limitless creative expression that we dive into our top 5 interior design trends for 2023, exploring nostalgic styling, the love of all things cozy-living, more-is-more pattern mixing, sustainable design and the lean toward durable fabrics and materials.

As it is with recent fashion trends, it would seem everything old is new again and retro - is in. Drawing on inspiration from arguably one of the most creative decade, 70’s-era design inspiration is cropping up everywhere. From textures to colour palettes, the nostalgic vibes are strong for this 2023 interior design trend.

Think: bold hues like saturated oranges and yellows. If the idea of bringing strong colours like this into your space feels too extreme, look for accents and accessories in these times-inspired hues and watch how they add a little 70’s grooviness.

Cozy-living

Plush fabrics, rounded edges and neutral, calming tones are all key elements of the coziest design trend on our list. With the aim of making your space as inviting and airy as possible, this trend aims to blend comfort with aesthetics for a soft and soothing design theme that will make you want to curl up and settle in.

The direction here is all down to personal preference. Ask yourself:

  • What colour palette is most calming to me?
  • What fabrics and materials make me feel the most relaxed?
  • What kind of “cozy experience” do I want to create in this space?

Sustainable Design

In 2023, sustainability continues to be a major consideration in all areas, and interior design is no exception. Making sustainable, conscious choices when it comes to design processes and materials is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and lend your support to companies and suppliers who have committed to sustainability efforts as well.

Here are a few sustainable fabric suggestions to get you started:

  • Organic cotton
  • Vegetarian silk
  • Natural wool
  • Hemp
  • Cork
  • Leatherette

More-is-more

Mixed prints? Patterns on patterns? Bold paint choices and heavy contrast? In 2023, the more-is-more trend is saying yes to all of the above. In a nod to heritage-styling, this aesthetic is all about luxury and overindulgence. Think: velvet tufted sofas, mixed seating styles and - wait for it - the return of wallpaper.

If this interior design trend sounds a little too eccentric for your tastes, you can try it out in a more user-friendly way:

  • Try rug-layering for that cozy-heritage feel. Take two rugs in the same style (rectangular, runner, etc) but in mixed prints and different sizes. Place the larger rug as a base and layer the smaller rug overtop, off-center. This looks especially warm in smaller spaces where you can easily play around with positioning furniture until the effect looks just right.
  • Try a statement wall on an otherwise “dead space”. Have a nook in your home that feels impossible to design for? Instead of scaling back your style sense to account for the smaller space, try the more-is-more approach here with a bold statement wall or fun wallpaper print. Stop viewing this space as an area that has you stumped and start considering the opportunities with this interior design trend in mind.

Indestructible materials and fabrics

Interior design trends may appear to favor aesthetics above all else, but many of the forecasted trends on our list reflect a more realistic approach to design strategy. From cozy styling to sustainability and our current highlighted trend, indestructible materials, these design directions are all about style with a purpose.

When it comes to indestructible materials and fabrics, it’s not hard to see the motivation. Interior design styling can be costly, and for the everyday individual or family unit, it’s important to know how far their dollar will stretch when it comes to the longevity and durability of your style selections. Anyone on-the-go knows from experience that there’s nothing worse than selecting a lush and beautiful sofa, only to have to spend your time fluffing and resetting it whenever you walk away. And for those who love the crisp-whites in their design choices, it’s common knowledge that some materials will pick up on dirt and stains more than others.

This trend is all about finding a balance between your design preferences and your everyday need for durability and ease of use. No parent wants to be policing their children 24/7 out of fear that something “delicate” (and no doubt, costly) is going to get damaged or destroyed.

Ultimately, interior design styling should come down to trends of interest and personal taste. Let your own preferences lead you as you pull inspiration from the year’s latest interior design trends and see how your space comes to life in new ways!
